What Actually Happens at the Hospital When You Place Your Baby for Adoption in Florida?

For many expectant mothers considering adoption, delivery day is the part of the process that feels the most unknown and the most frightening. I understand that. And I have found that the more clearly a birth mother understands what that day actually looks like, the less frightening it becomes.

So let me walk you through it honestly, because you deserve to know what to expect.

Before anything related to adoption, you have a birth plan. That plan belongs to you. You decide who is in the delivery room. You decide what kind of support you want during labor. You decide whether you want the adoptive family present at the hospital or whether you prefer to keep that experience private. None of those decisions are made for you, and none of them are dictated by the adoption plan.

When you work with our firm ahead of your due date, we coordinate with the hospital so that the staff understand your plan and can support it. That means you will not have to explain your situation to a nurse or doctor in the middle of labor. The people caring for you will already know, and they will follow your wishes.

One of the questions I hear most often is whether a birth mother gets to hold her baby after delivery. The answer is yes. You decide how much time you spend with your baby after birth. Some birth mothers choose to spend several days at the hospital with their child before placement. Others prefer a shorter time. Some want the adoptive family to visit during that period. Others want that time to be private and just for them.

There is no right or wrong answer. The hospital experience is yours, and it looks the way you decide it looks.

Under Florida law, a birth mother cannot sign consent to an adoption until at least 48 hours after her baby is born. This is an important legal protection that exists specifically so that no birth mother is ever pressured into signing paperwork before she has had time and space to be certain about her decision.

Until that signature is made, you have not made a final legal decision. The adoptive family may be at the hospital, your baby may be with them in a different room, and yet until you sign that consent, you retain full parental rights. That is not a small thing, and it is something I want every expectant mother to fully understand before delivery day arrives.

Once you are ready and you have made your decision, the placement happens. In most cases the adoptive family takes the baby home from the hospital. For many birth mothers this is the hardest moment, and there is no way to make it easy. What I can tell you is that the women I have worked with across Florida, from Tampa to Jacksonville to Boca Raton to Naples, have almost universally said that knowing they chose the family, knowing they built the plan, and knowing what the agreement allows them going forward gave them a kind of peace that they did not expect.
