When will an adoptee in Florida have access to an original birth certificate?

By: Erica T. Healey, Esq., Florida Board-Certified Adoption Attorney

In Florida, adoption records—including original birth certificates—are sealed following an adoption. While the Florida Legislature has previously considered open access to original birth certificates for adoptees, those measures have never passed.

Under current law, original birth certificates and adoption records remain sealed in most cases unless a court finds good cause to unseal them.

At Tate Healey Webster, we understand how meaningful it can be to connect with your origins. That’s why we offer Unsealing Adoption Records in Florida Services for adult adoptees. Our team can help you file a petition to unseal records, obtain non-identifying background information, and, when appropriate, act as an intermediary in the search for biological family members.

At Tate Healey Webster, we offer comprehensive legal support to adult adoptees, birth parents, and other eligible individuals seeking to:

  • File petitions to the court to unseal adoption records.

  • Access non-identifying information, such as medical histories and background details.

  • Act as intermediaries to facilitate contact if required by the court.

  • Conduct thorough searches for birth parents using private investigator resources.
