If you are beginning to research adoption, I am sure you are feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. Many families who contact our firm have already spent years navigating the emotional highs and lows of IVF, surrogacy, or other paths to parenthood and are ready to start their family. By the time they call us, they are often exhausted and unsure who to trust. Trying to navigate something new–adoption–when you are already at your wit’s end can seem overwhelming.
We are here to help, and are always available to help you get started. In October, I spoke with a hopeful adoptive parent who felt stuck. She had received conflicting advice and was wary of the risks involved, and had spent the last five years on a failed IVF journey. We sat down and looked at her specific goals, focusing on ethical practices and a transparent timeline. Based on her needs, I was able to point her toward a Florida agency who I knew was ethical and would help her with minimal risk, which was Heart of Adoptions.
Two months later, she sent me an email that I will never forget. She had received placement of a baby boy shortly before Christmas and said “I wanted to sincerely thank you for your recommendation of Heart of Adoptions. Shortly after our phone call in October, we joined the agency, and this week we matched with our baby boy! It is truly a Christmas Miracle.”
Stories like this are why we do what we do. While adoption is a deeply emotional journey, it is also a rigorous legal process that requires care, transparency, and strong ethical guardrails.
Identifying Your Adoption Priorities
In Florida, there is no single “right” way to adopt. Every family has different needs, and identifying yours early will help you choose the right path.
- Timing: If your priority is adopting as soon as possible, while ethically, we can discuss which agencies or consultants currently have the most active “tempo.”
- Risk Management: Some families prioritize minimizing legal or financial risk. We can help you understand which agencies or attorneys will best suit you here.
- Ethics and Support: It is vital that birth parents are fully informed, supported, and never pressured. An ethical adoption protects the child, the birth parents, and the adoptive family. There are some agencies and attorneys in Florida we would not recommend, to make sure you have an ethical adoption which protects all parties of the triad.
Ask the Right Questions Before You Commit
Before you sign a contract with an agency or an adoption entity, you need to understand the fine print. We often hear from families after a disruption has occurred or after they have paid but been on a waitlist for one or more years, but the best time to get legal guidance is before you commit. When vetting an agency or attorney, always ask:
- Which fees are truly nonrefundable?
- What is the “Out of Pocket” maximum if a birth parent changes their mind?
- Is the legal work being handled by a Board Certified Adoption Attorney?
- What are the agency or attorney’s ethics in working with an expectant mother?
