If you just found out you are pregnant and adoption has crossed your mind, the first thing I want you to know is this: you do not have to figure this out alone, and you do not have to have all the answers right now. I have been a board-certified adoption attorney in Florida for many years, and I have talked with hundreds of expectant mothers who called me not knowing what to say or where to start. Some were in their first trimester. Some were weeks from their due date. Some had already given birth. Every single one of them had questions, fears, and a love for their child that was driving every decision they were trying to make. If that sounds like you, keep reading.
What Does Placing a Baby for Adoption in Florida Actually Mean?
There is a lot of confusion around what adoption actually involves, and a lot of outdated language that makes it sound more frightening than it is. Placing a baby for adoption means you are making a voluntary, legal decision to choose a family to raise your child. It is not something that is done to you. It is a decision you make, on your terms, with full information. In Florida, you have the right to:
- Choose the adoptive family yourself from a pool of pre-screened, vetted families
- Decide whether you want an open, semi-open, or closed adoption
- Establish an open adoption plan that allows you to receive photos, letters, and even visits with your child over time
- Receive financial assistance for pregnancy-related expenses including housing, food, transportation, and medical costs not covered by insurance
- Take the time you need before making any final legal decision — in Florida, consent cannot be signed until at least 48 hours after birth
None of these decisions are made for you. You are in control of this process from beginning to end.
It Is Never Too Late to Explore Your Options
One of the most common things I hear from expectant mothers is that they waited too long to call because they thought it was too late. So many moms do not call until they are at the hospital! It is almost never too late. Whether you are in your first trimester or your third, whether you are weeks from your due date or have already delivered, there are options available to you. The earlier you reach out the more time we have to build a plan that truly reflects what you want, but please do not let timing stop you from picking up the phone.
What Happens When You Call?
When you call or text me, you are not committing to anything. You are just talking. I will listen to your situation, answer your questions honestly, and walk you through what the process looks like so you can decide if it feels right for you. There is no pressure, no judgment, and nothing you say leaves that conversation. We have offices across Florida including Tampa, Orlando, Naples, Merritt Island, Jacksonville, and Boca Raton, and we have helped expectant mothers from every corner of the state. Wherever you are in Florida, we can help. If you are pregnant and want to talk through your options, you can call or text me directly at any time. My number is 813-258-3359. It is completely confidential.
